ProMod Frame

This is the first ProMod frame we've done, although we've done a lot of dirt and street bike frames.

This ProMod bike frame was powder coated using only 2 ounces of powder.  That's right, we only added 2 ounces to the total weight of this frame.  Most ProMod people are afraid to paint or powder coat their frames, due to concerns with the amount of weight added by paint.

Even though powder is MUCH lighter than paint, everyone we talked to was still concerned about the amount of weight the process might add to the frame.  We originally estimated that the powder might add between 8 and 10 ounces to the frame weight.

It was a shock, even to us, as to how little powder we actually used.  It did require a more careful and delicate application, that took roughly 3 times longer than the dirt/street bike frames we've done in the past.

As you might imagine, our customer was extremely pleased with the end result.  We wish them the best with ADRL and any other race they enter!

Powder coating is a type of dry coating, which is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder.  The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin." It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as "white goods", aluminium extrusions, and automobile and motorcycle parts.

There are several advantages of powder coating over conventional liquid coatings:

  • Powder coatings emit zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOC).

  • Powder coating can produce a much thicker coating than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging.

  • Powder coating overspray can be recycled and thus it is possible to achieve nearly 100% use of the coating.

  • Powder coating produces less hazardous waste than conventional liquid coatings.

  • Powder coated items generally have fewer appearance differences between horizontally coated surfaces and vertically coated surfaces than liquid-coated items.

  • A wide range of specialty effects is easily accomplished which would be impossible to achieve with other coating processes.
